Understanding 911
- •Call 911 for police, fire, or medical emergencies anywhere in Canada.
- •You do not need coins or a SIM card to call 911 from a payphone or mobile.
- •Stay on the line and answer the operator's questions calmly.
- •If you don't speak English, say your language and an interpreter will be connected.
EMS & Ambulance Services
- •When you call 911 for a medical emergency, Emergency Medical Services (EMS) will send an ambulance.
- •In Alberta, ambulance fees may apply; coverage depends on your health plan and situation.
- •Do not drive yourself to the hospital if it is a true emergency — call 911.
- •Know your nearest hospital and clinic addresses in advance.
Finding Information as a Newcomer
- •Visit the Government of Canada newcomer portal (canada.ca) for settlement guides.
- •Use 211 (dial 2-1-1 or visit ab.211.ca) for free community and social service referrals.
- •Calgary Public Library offers free newcomer resources, language programs, and settlement worker visits.
- •Immigrant-serving agencies in Calgary provide free help with forms, housing, and jobs.
Learning English
- •Free English classes (LINC) are available for permanent residents and some newcomers.
- •Calgary Public Library hosts free conversation circles and ESL tutoring.
- •Ask your settlement worker for a referral to Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada.
Health Care in Alberta
- •Register for an Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP) card as soon as you arrive.
- •Most basic medical services are free with a health card; prescriptions and dental usually are not.
- •For non-urgent health questions call 811 to speak with a registered nurse, 24/7.
- •Bring your immigration documents when registering at a clinic or hospital.
Important Documents to Keep
- •Keep your passport, permanent resident card, or work/study permit valid and accessible.
- •Make copies of all immigration documents and store them safely.
- •A Social Insurance Number (SIN) is required to work in Canada — apply at Service Canada.
- •Carry your Alberta health card and a piece of photo ID at all times.
